Originally from Chicago and based in Brooklyn, Matty Rico was born to Puerto Rican migrant parents. His approach to hip hop is defined by a love for gripping storytelling; his song “Sweet Home Chicago” is powerful social commentary used in classrooms across the country to educate students on the reality of everyday violence in his hometown.
Musically, Rico is highly eclectic; while some of his work embodies the boom-bap sound of 90’s hip hop, his recent output features a modern outlook paired with smooth and spacious R&B production. His unpredictable flow walks the line between upbeat and mellow.
Known for his crossover appeal, Rico has collaborated with Mexican legends like Camilo Lara, of Mexican Institute of Sound, and Toy Selectah.
