Two-time GRAMMY Award-nominated Sones de México Ensemble brings concertgoers of all backgrounds a taste of Mexican folk and traditional music at its best, celebrating their heritage through innovative performances and engaging approaches to music education. With a vibrant energy with elegant arrangements, Chicago-based Sones de México Ensemble's music creates a contagious joy that will have you dancing in no time. Drawing upon influences from a wide range of regional Mexican music traditions and using over 50 all-acoustic folk instruments, the group's sound is eclectic, yet familiar. They have thrilled audiences across the nation—including those at Levitt Shell Memphis during their 2008 performance—with their engaging and entertaining celebrations of Mexican folk music and culture. Formed in 1994, the ensemble currently consists of six multi-instrumentalists, including original members Juan Díes, Rene Cardoza and Gonzalo Cordova who are joined by more recent additions Zacbe Pichardo, Eric Hines and Erendira Izguerra. Layering ornate vocal harmonies over dynamic instrumentation, Sones de México Ensemble’s dual passion for music and the rich Mexican folk tradition makes for fun, lively music with vivid authenticity.
Sones de México’s 2007 album Esta Tierra Es Tuya (This Land Is Your Land)—which featured a translation of Woodie Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” as well as an arrangement of J.S. Bach’s “Concerto No. 3” and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Four Sticks”—was nominated for two GRAMMY Awards. Also a nonprofit organization, Sones de México Ensemble organizes nationwide educational programs that have introduced thousands of children and adults to the vibrant traditions of Mexican music, dance and culture.
