Put on your dancing shoes for Dr. Cheeko, a Jersey coast fixture who is synonymous with the tropical sound.
After immigrating to the U.S. from Puerto Rico and joining the Air Force, Dr. Cheeko started a band at Hunter Airfield in Savannah, Ga. Following a stint in Miami—where he picked up his nickname—Dr. Cheeko moved to New Jersey, where he developed a party beach band called Dr. Cheeko & The Island Sound that became a must-see attraction. Joining Dr. Cheeko onstage are Vikki Austin and Coco (vocals), Caribbean-born Frankie Gibson (vocals, bass), Steve May (guitar) and brothers Timmy (brass, percussion, vocals) and Jimmy Ingrahm (keyboards and saxophone).
A frequent guest of regional venues such as Martell’s Tiki Bar in Point Pleasant, N.J., Dr. Cheeko & The Island Sound play reggae, R&B, country and salsa, often taking requests from the audience. With an upbeat style and insatiable energy, Dr. Cheeko and his band have earned a loyal fan base.
