This eight-piece band serves up raw, hard-hitting funk and soul bolstered by bandleader Jaedyn James’ powerful vocals. James is a crooner and storyteller who, at 23 years old, quit her full-time job and assembled a group of musicians in her hometown of Minneapolis, Minn. Gathering a crew of brass instruments, percussionists, guitars and drums, the band began channelling golden age soul and James’ love of poetry to create soul-stirring compositions and fiery funk goodness. Each of their singles in a string of releases over the last two years, including “Set You On Fire” and “Love Is Here,” showcase a band unafraid of foot-stomping rhythms, catchy choruses and colorful nostalgia.
Echoing the infectious on-stage personas of James Brown, Etta James, Lucille Ball, Jaedyn James and The Hunger carry a unique stage presence that is equal parts theatrical and deeply soulful. Their vintage palette and refreshing take on soul has captured the attention of audiences across the Midwest—with Star Tribune calling them one of “12 great new Minnesota bands to discover this summer” and Twin Cities Media lauding their “contagious energy” and “perfect blend of blues, soul and funk.”
