Drawing inspiration from the soulful sounds of New Orleans brass bands, marching bands of historically black colleges and classic R&B funk bands, nine-member Nasty Nati Brass Band delivers an explosive combination of jazz, funk, blues and R&B. Founded in 2012, trumpeter Mike Wade leads the Ohio-based band through blazing musical arrangements. This soulful, nontraditional brass band infuses the flavors of Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, the Balkans and North America into their music to create their vibrant ‘Nasty Nati’ style. The ensemble uses brass, saxophones and drums to create a larger-than-life sound, drawing influence from R&B and rock ‘n’ roll legends like Earth, Wind and Fire, James Brown and Bootsy Collins. Their dynamic live performances are spattered with solos and riffs that give each song virtuosity and depth, so that no two performances are alike. The Nasty Nati Brass Band plays a combination of traditional and contemporary brass band music that will entertain and delight audiences of all walks of life.
The Nasty Nati Brass band has performed at high-profile festivals like the Columbus Jazz Festival and the Cincinatti Jazz & BBQ festival, and at landmark venues such as the Greenwich in Cincinnati, the Bop Stop in Cleveland and Blujazz in Akron, Ohio, as well as stages across the country like Blues Alley in Washington D.C., and Shaka’s in Virginia Beach, Va. Frontman Mike Wade was rated one of the top unsigned jazz brass players by Jazziz Magazine in 1997 and his composition “Blues for Shorty Bop” was chosen for inclusion in the Jazziz on Disc collection.
